create unintended, contradictory messages in service of a joke or
comedic timing. These implicit messages undercut the goal of
subverting negative stereotypes. Why should viewers challenge
dangerous and problematic stereotypes if they are just going to lose
out in the long run? Why should viewers challenge stereotypes,
rape culture, and gender inequality if they will not benefit from
doing the right thing? These questions are what the second season
of Master of None needs to reconcile in order for the strong social
message to be communicated effectively.
