The academic year ended for most on the third Monday in May with Ben
Bradlee, Executive Editor of the Washington Post, addressing graduates as the
University’s 146th commencement speaker. Rain and wind knocked down the com-
mencement tent the night before graduation, but the program proceeded on schedule
and included the first MALS student to graduate from the University, Jean Cooper.
Metaphorically, the winds of positive change were blowing in the direction of the
University as it continued to gain recognition on a number of academic, athletic, and
professional fronts.
