Stroupe was a flutist in the University’s wind ensemble and a Presidential Scholar in
the Arts.
Sam O. Kerlin received a Beinecke Scholarship for 1996. It provided over $30,000
for graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
Will Garin, a senior, sculptured three figures out of 1,200 pounds of steel chain.
The work, “Link,” was the first student sculpture the University bought for its art
collection. It was displayed on a grassy slope between Tribble Hall and the Benson
University Center.
In Greek Life, the Alpha Delta Pi sorority disbanded. The few remaining mem-
bers were seniors and simply wanted to enjoy their year and not have to worry about
rush and other projects. The Delta Nu chapter of Sigma Chi was presented the Legion
of Honor Award by the Sigma Chi Foundation in recognition of its scholarship pro-
gram. The Alpha Upsilon Delta chapter of Chi Psi received the John Lister Goodbody
Trophy from the Chi Psi Educational Trust for academic achievement.
In sad news, a memorial service was held in Davis Chapel for rising senior Paul
S. Mory IV, who died on March 29 of complications resulting from a car accident in
Winston-Salem in August.
Facilities, Finances, and Alumni
The Perritt Flag Plaza was dedicated in a ceremony on April 25. Located on the
Benson University Center traffic circle, the plaza features walkways, landscaping, a
