Deborah Best (Psychology) was selected as the new Dean of the College. The
Quad’s concrete sidewalks were replaced with brick as the Young Student Walkway
was finished. Martin Hall, a new residence for upperclass students, and Kirby Hall, a
new home for the Calloway School of Business, were completed and occupied.
The campus celebrated another field hockey championship. Coach Jennifer
Averill guided the team to a 22–1 season and beat Duke 3–2 in overtime for both
the ACC and NCAA championships. Six Deacon women were named to the All-
ACC team: Kelly Dostal, who scored the winning goal, Maeke Boreel, Claire Laubach,
Kelly Doton, Katie Ridd, and Lucy Shaw.
Although the academic year did not officially end for another five weeks, it
wrapped up for most students and faculty at commencement, with the baccalaureate
service featuring noted author and Episcopal priest John R. Claypool of the McAfee
School of Theology at Mercer University, and Secretary of State Colin Powell deliver-
ing the 160th commencement address. Powell was the fourth Republican in a row
to speak, following Barbara Bush, John McCain, and Michael Bloomberg, but he
was the first African American to speak since Governor Wilder of Virginia in 1991.
A crowd of 15,000 assembled on the University Plaza to hear him address approxi-
mately 1,600 graduates.
