Dudley Shapere, a professor at the Uni-
versity of Maryland, was named Reynolds
Professor of History and Philosophy of Sci-
ence, and his wife, Hannah M. Hardgrave,
became Adjunct Professor of Philosophy.
Physicist Richard T. Williams (’68) was also
named a Reynolds Professor. When named,
he was head of the ultraviolet technology sec-
tion of the optical probes branch at the Naval
Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
Catherine T. Harris (Sociology) won
the Excellence in Teaching Award given on
Founders’ Day; James Ralph Scales (former
President and Worrell Professor of Anglo-
American Studies) received the Ecumeni-
cal Institute’s Cuthbert E. Allen Award; and
Andrew Ettin (English) published a well-
received book, Literature and the Pastoral
(Yale University Press).
