move, Bill Dooley was hired that very day as
the new head football coach, within a week
of Al Groh’s departure. Dooley, who had had
previous winning records at the University
of North Carolina and Virginia Tech, with
an overall record of 132–91–3, became the
thirtieth head football coach in Wake Forest
Television’s P.M. Magazine featured a
video of the “Deacon Rap” recorded by thir-
teen Wake Forest football players right before the 1986 season. The chorus went as
We’re the Deacs. You know our name.
All this rap is part of our game.
Hustlin’ keeps us lean and mean,
A Black and Gold fightin’ machine.
It’s the Deacon rap and before we’re through,
You’re gonna be a Wake Watcher, too.
