because it is the first large painting using a pose taken from a classical statue (a Roman variation of
Praxiteles’ Aphrodite of Knidos) in a painting with classical subject matter. Earlier artists knew about
Praxiteles’ statue and used its classical pose in paintings, but they gave the pose to a figure in a religious
painting as opposed to a classical one. (For example, Masaccio gave the pose to Eve in his painting Expulsion
from Paradise.
