Chapter 7 - Treasures of Darkness

the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.” Isaiah 45:3
There is a truth of being human that is often difficult
to acknowledge and accept. Actress and writer Emma
Thompson said it like this: “It’s unfortunate, and I really wish
I wouldn’t have to say this, but I really like human beings who
have suffered. They’re kinder.” Most of us who are willing to
be honest about our own darkest hours as well as let into our
hearts the pain and suffering of others will come to agree with
this sentiment. Suffering softens, if we allow it to do so.
As a parent, I have experienced situations with my
children that cloud and shadow our family life as well as times
in which I felt plunged into darkness. Given a choice, I would
