Incoming Class of Fall 2016
This fall the School of Divinity welcomes 41 new Master of Divinity students. Of those 41, five are completing a joint degree (2 in education,
1 in sustainability, 1 in sustainability). The class ranges in age from 21 to 62, comes from 13 states, 3 countries, and 33 undergraduate col-
leges and universities, and represents more than 18 religious affiliations. Over fifty percent of the class is female, 43% identify as ethnic mi-
nority, and nearly eighty percent are 30 or younger. The incoming class attended New Student Orientation in late August, themed Piecing
Food, Health, and Ecological Well-Being Expansion
In 2012, Wake Forest University School of Divinity identified this need and created the Food, Faith, and Religious Leadership Initiative. Our
goal was to help faith leaders create more redemptive food systems: local, equitable food economies that create health for both people and
planet. Here on campus we created a Food & Faith concentration for students enrolled in our Master of Divinity program. But our work
doesn’t stop there. The continuing education workshops and retreats sponsored by this Initiative have attracted hundreds of faith leaders
from across North Carolina. Interest has spread beyond North Carolina to include representatives from 17 states stretching from Arizona to
Washington, D.C.; from 10 colleges (Wake Forest University to Exeter University in England); and from more than a dozen Christian denomi-
nations. We gained support from such national foundations as Kalliopeia, Opaline
Fund, and the Byron Fellowship Educational Foundation. We created a pilot fellowship
program for young religious leaders working in the areas of food justice and sustaina-
ble agriculture; convened four summer courses in Food, Faith, and Ecology in the
North Carolina mountains; and continue to host continuing education events in central
and western North Carolina.
After four years, it’s time to expand and deepen our work. In order to reflect the holistic nature of our program we have become the Food,
Health, and Ecological Well-Being Program. We are excited to see where the coming years will lead us.
Big Data and Privacy
As we become more and more connected, we generate more and more data. How to handle Big Data in a data-driven business world is the
focus of the BB&T Center for the Study of Capitalism’s panel discussion “Personal Concierge or Big Brother: Balancing the Possibilities of Big
Data with the Need for Privacy” at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15 in Broyhill Auditorium. Innovations such as better algorithms, the
Internet of Things, and social media have privacy implications that affect almost all of us. Assistant Professor of IS and Analytics Lauren Rhue
will serve as moderator. Guests Morgan Reed, executive director of ACT, and Alessandro Acquisti, professor of information technology and
public policy, will serve as panelists. They’ll discuss these privacy issues and offer ideas on balancing innovation with privacy.
M.S. in Business Analytics: Our first class begins
The inaugural class (pictured right) of the M.S. in Business Analytics (MSBA) at
the School of Business presents some compelling numbers: students from 27
colleges and universities around the world, more than a dozen different majors,
nine Double Deacs, and two veterans. But this is not the whole story. Beyond

WFU School of Business MBA students develop nanotechnology to fight lung
Accelerated NanoTech, a startup medical device company founded by a team of
Wake Forest School of Business MBA students, has proposed a new, faster, and
more reliable test for non-small cell lung cancer. This sharply reduces both costs
to patients from hundreds of dollars to $10 and diagnosis time from days to
hours. For their innovation, the Wake Forest team was named finalists in the Nanotechnology Startup Challenge. The Challenge features
inventions conceived and developed by scientists at the National Institutes of Health, and business plans developed by teams to accelerate
and increase the volume of commercialized cancer nanotechnology to market through startups.
BEM Table Top Tradeshow
More than 100 Business and Enterprise Management (BEM) interns will demonstrate what they learned in more than 90 companies across
the United States, China, Ecuador, El Salvador, and the United Kingdom. The BEM internship is a rigorous requirement for graduation with
faculty advisor check-ins, weekly contacts, reflective paper, and the presentation to a panel of judges. The Table Top Tradeshow will be held
September 15 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Benson University Center. Judges award prizes for Best in Show and other spotlight categories to
students for their exemplary work.
